Research shows that damage to neurons containing Dopamine and Serotonin occurs to the nerve endings "terminals" which appear to have limited ability to re-grow, thus putting the user at risk for conditions such as Parkinsons & Alzheimers in later years.
At its most impure, methamphetamine is sold as a crumbly brown or off-white rock commonly referred to as "peanut butter crank.
Typical cleanup costs for a meth lab are between $4000 and $10000 (NCDOJ, 2004). According to one local drug task force agent interviewed recently, some of the gases produced in a clandestine meth lab are instantly deadly if inhaled. Children playing, eating and sleeping in a meth lab are surrounded by the deadly gases. All adults and children removed from a meth lab are showered, decontaminated, and dressed in haz/mat suits before they are removed from the area. Children living at, or near a meth lab are exposed to immediate dangers and to the on going effects of chemical contamination. The extent of the lasting or long-term physical effects on meth users or their children who are exposed to a meth lab are not known
Students who use drugs are statistically more likely than nonusers to drop out of school, bring guns and knives to school, and be involved in physical attacks, property destruction, stealing, and cutting classes (SAMHSA, 2004). Drug abuse not only interferes with a student's ability to learn, it also disrupts the orderly environment necessary for all students to succeed. Student drug testing can help reduce the occurrence of these disruptive behaviors, which benefits everyone in the school and community.

Drug Counseling

The focus of drug counseling is centered around the individual.s drug abuse problem, who they are as a person, and the content and structure of their addiction recovery program. Drug counseling provides the individual with coping strategies and tools for a successful recovery. The primary goal of drug counseling is to assist the individual in achieving and maintaining abstinence from drugs. The secondary goal of drug counseling is to help the individyal recover from the damage that drug addiction has caused in their life.

Drug abuse is a problem that is often times misunderstood. It is common for the family and friends of a drug abuser to feel as though the individual is morally weak and should be able to stop their drug use if they were only willing to change their behavior. Drug abuse affects people from all walks of life and anyone can succumb to abusing drugs. It does not make a difference how financially secure an individual is or even if they have had a wonderful family life. Developing an addiction problem is strictly about the individual. No one sets out to become a drug addict. It is all about the choices they make along the way that leads them down the path of drug addiction.

Drug counseling works by first helping the individual recognize the existence of a problem and the associated irrational thinking that comes along with drug abuse. Next, the individual is encouraged to achieve and maintain abstinence from drugs and develop the necessary communication skills and personal growth to continue working towards a complete recovery from drug abuse. In drug counseling, it is the individual who must take responsibility for working on and succeeding with a program of recovery.

Drug counseling focuses on four components:

  • Assessing level of usage and potential for addiction.
  • Providing education on the physical and mental effects of the substance.
  • Recognizing and preventing potential addiction.
  • Creating awareness of available rehabilitative services.

There are many different drug counseling programs available. These programs will help those in recovery fight their drug cravings, avoid relapse, and learn new tools and skills necessary to prevent drug use in the future.

Drug counseling has an enormous beneficial effect not only on the individual and their family but on society as a whole. When drug abusers get counseling, society benefits greatly.
