Drug/Alcohol Testing in Kansas
While conducting drug/alcohol testing in Kansas, it is important to realize that there are many different types of drug and alcohol tests. Essentially, these tests are based on the types of substances of abuse that are being tested for as well as the type of specimen that will be collected. Examples of test specimen include sweat, saliva, oral fluid, hair, and urine samples.
In testing programs that are regulated by the federal government, only urine samples will be collected. However, there are proposals from the Department of Health and Human Services for oral fluid specimen to be included.
Generally speaking, tests will typically be used for 5 broad categories of substances of abuse. These include PCP (phencyclidine), opiates, marijuana, cocaine, and amphetamines. However, it is also possible to find tests for propoxyphene, methaqualone, methadone, MDMA, hydrocodone, alcohol or ethanol, benzodiazepines, and barbiturates.
To deter drug abuse, it is most effective to use random tests. Employers, parents, and schools even use these random tests in a selection process that is difficult to predict. This ensures their effectiveness.
That said, the importance of drug/alcohol testing cannot be overemphasized. Irrespective of where and when it is used, the goal is to ensure that people stay away from alcohol and drugs, among other substances of abuse.
