Drug Ed and Prevention in Vermont
Effective drug education and prevention in Vermont is important. This is because young people - as well as other at-risk populations - tend to struggle with negative influences to abuse drugs and drink alcohol in excess.
Through education, it is possible to counterbalance these negative influences with a positive influence. Further, it is effective in the sense that it can shape a normative culture of informed decision making, moderation, and safety.
There are various stakeholders that can be effective in offering drug education and prevention programs and enforcing them. They include parents and families, teachers and educators, and other leaders in the community - such as pastors, role models, and other people that the target populations look up to.
These stakeholders use a wide range of resources to help with drug and alcohol related issues. This is particularly true with regards to the issues that involve student retention and youth truancy. Today, research also shows that it is important to engage parents in drug prevention and education. This is due to the fact that parents play a crucial role especially during the formative years of their children.
That said, the goal of drug education and prevention programs is to reduce - to a bare minimum - the rates of substance abuse and addiction among certain at-risk populations, which could include children, students, teenagers, people living in substance using families, and young people.
