Halfway & Transitional Housing in Wisconsin
The word "home" rings a little bit differently in the ears of all who hear it. For some it means the warm embrace of family. For others, it's a blessed refuge from the rain. And for still others it's four simply four walls where they can let down your guard. But for people struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, a stable home can actually mean the difference between relapsing on the street and re-entering the workforce, the difference between getting high and getting hired, and the difference between a wasted life, and one that walked boldly towards the future.
A Crucial Stepping Stone
Halfway (or "transitional") housing is the crucial first step after being released from an inpatient treatment facility. It's a residence, but it also is able to provide the medical, social, educational, and psychiatric services that drug abusers need so that they can become accustomed to resisting temptation and keep their sobriety. These structured residences are a place for them to stabilize their life, their bodies and minds, and to be held accountable to others. Transitional housing time limits vary, but they usually involve a temporary span of up to 24 months, and usual house rules include doing house chores, maintaining regular employment (or continuing to seek employment,) and respecting the house curfew. For former addicts this kind of regimented living is an absolute necessity.
